Metamorphosis
2024
Metamorphosis traces the journey of wool and pashmina from the highlands of Ladakh to the homes and workshops of Kashmir, where textile traditions such as Sujni, Kani, and Tilla continue to be practiced with deep care. Through intimate portraits of artisans at work, the project looks at the relationship between craft, devotion, memory, and everyday life.
Made from the position of an outsider, the work also reflects on the quiet negotiations that exist within photographing a place shaped by conflict, climate, faith, and cultural inheritance. Rather than offering a fixed reading of Kashmir, Metamorphosis follows the thread as a way to enter conversations around labour, belonging, endurance, and the fragile continuities of handmade traditions.
